School of Rock – Opening on Broadway
Andrew Lloyd Webber returns to Broadway, this time with a new adaptation of the 2003 film starring Jack Black ‘School of Rock’, written by Mike White. Webber has composed 14 new songs for the show, and also included all the original songs from the film. The show features a live kids rock band, with a truly talented cast of young children, the live on-stage band is no more than 12 years old, and contains a 9 year old bass player “whose bass is taller than she is” Webber says in an interview, in the The Stage.
The musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed rock star wannabe, who was recently kicked out of his own band. After struggling to find a new job, Finn secretly poses as a substitute teacher, to earn some extra money, at a high standard prep school. After discovering that he knows very little about the curriculum he is meant to be ‘teaching’, Dewey decides to create his own rock band. He enters his kid band into the local Battle of The Bands after seeing his ex-rock band has entered without him, he sees a chance to get revenge and his shot at stardom.
As a young teenager, I always loved this film and the power it gave me as a kid who loved music. I found it inspiring to watch, with a fantastic storyline and not to mention Jack Black’s hilarious comedy, this is a timeless film, and no matter how many times I watch it, it never gets old. This is on my short list of shows to see, so I’ll be raiding my savings given half the chance.
School of Rock is coming to the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway on the 9th of November 2015 and is scheduled to run through till November 2016.
So, go and indulge yourself, book your tickets and pledge allegiance to the band! This one is going to be a hit.
