American Idiot to start UK Tour
The hit musical American Idiot has announced its UK tour, beginning 19th March 2016, following its close at the West End’s Arts Theatre, on the 22nd November 2015. Using the music of the iconic band Green Day, American Idiot follows the story of three boys, Johnny, Will and Tunny, and their friendship, as they struggle through a post 9-11 world.
Much like Mamma Mia! uses the music of Abba, ‘American Idiot’, uses the music of Green Day to inspire a new story. Personally, I love Green Day and their music, one thing I love about this production is the realistic view of it, it includes many issues faced by people after 9-11. The serious tone of the performance is much like that of RENT, the way it looks at issues such as drugs, relationships and much more.
American Idiot is the winner of two Tony Awards, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2010. The show features all the songs off of Green Day’s album ‘American Idiot’, including the hit songs “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot” and a few more off their more recent album ‘21st Century Breakdown’, such as “21 Guns.”
Although the main music was written by Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong had a lot of interaction with the director Racky Plews, Billie co-wrote the book with Michael Mayer, and also starred as the character St Jimmy on stage. Billie isn’t the only celebrity the show has featured, the production has recently taken on X Factor Finalist Amelia Lily, as the character ‘Whatshername’.
